Abstract
This work entitled: « Factors hindering the teaching and learning of the listening skill in secondary schools". A case study of selected schools in Bujumbura Mayorship, Ruyigi, Kayanza, Rutana and Gitega Provinces, airns to identify the factors that hinder a good teaching and learning ofthe listening skill in secondary schools. A number of factors were raised and reviewed in this study and the researcher lay more emphasis on the lack ofmaterials for effective teaching of the listening comprehension and the lack of using many and varied listening comprehension activities in the classroom. Therefore, four hypotheses were formulated namely: the teaching materials used by the teachers do not permit the students to make a progression in listening; the teachers do not use methods that encourage students to practice the listening comprehension skill.
The course books and other resources are not sufficient for an effective teaching and learning of listening skill, also the students are not motivated to irnprove on
the listening skill outside the classroom.
A sample comprising 154 students from five schools in five provinces which was selected randomly. Questionnaires were used, the data collected were analyzed and the following was revealed in the study: the teachers were using techniques which are not appropriate. In addition, the activities which are good to promote the students' ability to use the language are totally ignored, also the lack of books for learners was observed. Moreover, it was discovered that the teaching and the learning of listening skill in pt Arts Form is hindered by the lack of materials. Then, sorne recommendations were made 10 different partners involved in the educational system.
