Abstract
The thesis was carried out with an atternpt to rnake a pragmatic analysis of sorne words used in the Burundian Unity Anthem : Ubumwe bw Abarundi .The work is subdivided in five chapters . Chapter One is the General Introduction which introduces the topic, presents the background of the problern ,objectives of the study, research questions, limitations and significance of the study . Chapter Two made by Literature Review,dealt with providing defmitions of the key word, that is progmatics,its re1ated theories and fields. Chapter Three presents which rnethodology is used in data collection and analysis. lt shows also the difficulties encountered in data collection such as translation of sorne kirundi words used. Chapter Four is the study itself. It gives answers to the different reseach questions stated in the first chapter. It made a pragmatic analysis of the different words used in the anthem. Chapter Five is the General Conclusion and recommendations. It helps in giving suggestions on how to improve the undersanding of this anthem. The objective of the study was to rnake a pragmatic analysis of sorne words used in the Burundian Unity Anthern : Ubumwe bw 'Abarundi . To conduct the study, 1used two research questions which are the following : 1. What are the socio-cultural values expressed in sorne selected words from theBumndian National Unity Anthem? 2. How does the Burundian National Unity Anthem 'Ubumwe bw' Abarundi' make lise of the different speech acts? As findings it showed how the research questions have been answered, that is, through the influence of socio-cultural context in the understanding of the words used and the conveyed message through the use of different speech acts and their illocutionary forces Sorne suggestions and recommendations were made. Many studies can be done on the anthern in other domains such as sernantics and it should also be given a place in education
