Thesis Abstract: "Life experiences associated with cancer: a study of women living with breast cancer treated at at the Centre Hospitalo-Universitaire de Kamenge" Breast cancer represents a major global public health challenge and is the most frequently diagnosed cancer among women. In Burundi, breast cancer diagnoses are often delayed, and access to specialized care remains limited. Beyond the medical aspects, the disease profoundly affects the identity, body image, and femininity of the women involved, as well as their family and social relationships. This study examines the life experiences of women with breast cancer receiving care at at the Centre Hospitalo-Universitaire de Kamenge. It aims to understand their reactions to the diagnosis, analyze their psychological experiences throughout the course of treatment, and study their coping strategies in the face of the disease. The study employs a qualitative approach based on semi-structured interviews with four female volunteers. Thematic analysis revealed key findings, notably that receiving the diagnosis is a deeply distressing event characterized by shock, fear of death, a state of stunned disbelief, and anxiety about the future. Treatments also bring about physical changes that affect self-image, femininity, and relationships. To cope, patients draw upon family support, spirituality, a gradual acceptance of the illness, and trust in healthcare professionals. Thus, this study highlights the importance of a holistic approach to breast cancer that integrates psychological, social, and existential dimensions, and recommends strengthening psychosocial support within oncology care services in Burundi.
