Evaluation de la croissance et du rendement de quelques cultivars de Gombo (Abelmoschus esculentus L. Moench) cultivés à Bujumbura et ses environs.

Abstract

With the aim of contributing the range of knowledge on the cultivation of Okra (Abelmoschus esculentus L. Moench) in Burundi, a study based on morphological and yield parameters was conducted to evaluate the different okra cultivars already cultivated in Burundi. Twenty-four (24) cultivars were collected in different localities of the city of Bujumbura and its surroundings from the different okra cultivators and were cultivated in the “Centre de Recherche en Sciences Naturelles et de l’Environnement” (CRSNE), Faculty of Sciences, University of Burundi, for the period of November, 2018 to July, 2019. After the analyses of variances on 22 quantitative and qualitative parameters studied, sixteen (16) cultivars were highly identified. The earliest cultivars showed the maturity of the first fruits between the 11th and 13th week, the cultivars of average earliness between the 14th and 17th week and the very late cultivars between the 23rd and 26th week after sowing, for a height varying between 61 ± 28.86 cm and 250.43 ± 22.74 cm. The final height of plants to senescence ranged from 63.43 ± 23.4 to 95.25 ± 5.25 cm for the shortest cultivars, 101.57 ± 38.5 to 148.71 ± 36.45 cm for medium cultivars and 167.14 ± 41.05 to 298.14 ± 67.24 cm for high cultivars. The time to full plant maturity ranged from 3 months to 7 months. The earliest cultivars had low fruit yield and high number of seeds per fruit while the late cultivars had high fruit yield and low number of seeds per fruit.
