The aim of the study is to contribute to the knowledge of Raphia ruwenzorica in Burundi in order to ensure its sustainable conservation. The study took place in the natural region of Mumirwa in the provinces of Bujumbura and Rumonge. The data of number of feet of species were obtained from an inventory carried out along rivers and their tributaries while information regarding the socio-economic importance of the species was collected by survey. The results show that in Bujumbura province the species is present in the communes of Kanyosha, Nyabiraba, Kabezi and Mutambu while in Rumonge province, it is present in the communes of Buyengero and Burambi. A total of 8172 Raffia ruwenzorica plants including 1181 flowering plants, 5918 flowerless plants and 1073 young plants were recorded in the study area. Almost all parts of Raffia ruwenzorica can be used, but the fibers from the leaves of this plant are the most used by the local population in making mats. The fibers are also used for braiding hats. They are still used by the Intore and Umuyebe dancers in various ceremonies across the country. Hives are made from the petioles and trunk of the species. The latter are also used as firewood but also in the construction of fences and stables. The species is in decline in its area of distribution. The results of the present study reveal that the species is regressing in the study area, even though it is the preferred species and ranks the first among the indigenous species important to the population. Thus, it is essential to undertake actions to disseminate seedling and the relative techniques of their production.
