This research focuses on the socio-anthropological analysis of punctuality in scientific activities at the University of Burundi. It seeks to understand the social, cultural, economic, and institutional logics that shape compliance or non-compliance with academic schedules. The central issue examines how punctuality, as both a social norm and an institutional requirement, is experienced, represented, and practiced by students and lecturers in the Burundian university context. The study is based on three main hypotheses. First, the lack of punctuality among lecturers and students is influenced by a combination of sociocultural, economic, and institutional factors. Second, lateness disrupts the normal conduct of academic activities and undermines the quality of teaching and learning. Third, recurrent unpunctuality progressively demotivates students and weakens their relationship with academic authority. Methodologically, the research adopts a qualitative approach. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews with lecturers and students from the Mutanga, Rohero, and Zege campuses, as well as through direct observation of temporal dynamics in scientific activities. The study also draws on written documents, electronic resources, and oral testimonies. Findings reveal that punctuality is regarded as an essential academic value but is weakly enforced. Recurrent lateness among both lecturers and students stems from several factors: cultural perceptions of time, transportation constraints, economic difficulties, and insufficient institutional rigor in enforcing regulations. This situation generates significant negative effects: student demotivation, reduced pedagogical efficiency, lower quality of learning, strained teacher–student relationships, and a decline in the university’s prestige. Nevertheless, some actors develop strategies to improve time management, such as reorganizing schedules, raising awareness about the value of punctuality, and practicing self-discipline. In conclusion, the study highlights the importance of revaluing punctuality as an academic and institutional norm, not only to enhance the quality of scientific activities at the University of Burundi but also to strengthen the social and professional discipline of future graduates.
