Item Gendering through songs : an analysis of gender discourse and performativity in selected rundi wedding songs(UB, Faculty of arts and social sciencies , 2017-08) Ininahazwe, Gloriose; Supervisor: Dr. Marie Thérèse Toyi LecturerThis work aims at examining the gender based message eonveyed through Rundi wedding songs by showing the influence of what people sing on people. Through Rundi wedding songs, people assign roles to members of the family and this is done basing on gender. This assignment of roles to members of the family basing on gender affeets members of the family and society both positively and negatively. Wc lind that women are given more responsibilities than men and these roles are one of the causes for women to live a dependent life. Therefore, Rundi wedding songs as a form of Burundians oralliterature help in transmitting Burundians values, norms and beliefs from generation to generation. As our study is a field study where we had to meet people and talle to them, qualitative researeh method has been used so as to get information from our informants. The study was carried out based on the assumption that Rundi wedding songs are gender based and refleet Burundians culture. This study therefore assumes that the gender discourse and performativity in Rundi wedding songs teach people about maritallife. Furthermore, through wedding songs, people assign roles to both wife and husband basing on gender.
