    La dégradation du littoral du lac Tanganyika au Burundi : approche multidisciplinaire

    A multidisciplinary study analysed the degradation of Lake Tanganyika habitats on the Burundense coast. Several river mouths and the lake shore were sampled near the city of Bujumbura and in the southern part of the country for analysis at several levels: physico-chemistry, diatoms, macrophytes, macro-invertebrates and fish. The results obtained based on these indicators show that the Kanyosha River has a lot of potential in terms of ecological quality, while the Muha and Ntahangwa Rivers seem to be the most polluted. The biodiversity is richer in the South (mostly the tributaries Kamango, Murembwe and Rwaba). In addition to the typology of the sampled sites, the indices show a general degradation of the tributaries of the coastal environment, and to a larger extent in the north of the lake, around Bujumbura. The objective of this study is to alert the scientific community and the decision makers about the progressive degradation of the lake, and to put forward the necessity of setting up a monitoring system on the dynamics of biodiversity and water quality of Lake Tanganyika based on the study of bio-indicators as a basis for decision making and management to mitigate and stop the alarming pollution and degradation of the lake.
