An analysis of pronunciation by bundian learners of english : a case study of some secondary schools in Makamba province
(UB, FLSH, 2017) Misago, Venant; Sous la direction de : Mr. Julius Ayancho,
The present study investigates areas of pronunciation which proves to be difficult to sorne Burundian learners of English. The study proves that sorne Burundian learners of English as a Foreign Language, are influenced by their LI and L2.To take up this study, the researcher asked hirnself three questions. For the first question, he wanted to know whether there are, in English, sorne speech sounds which are not in learner's LI and L2• Secondly, he wanted to know if the speech sounds do not cause the learner difficulties in the learning process. Thirdly and last, he wanted to know the characteristics ofthe English spoken by Burundian learners. In his investigation, the researcher used oral tests and teachers' questionnaire. From the research, it is obvious that the learners have difficulties of sorne strange English speech sounds to which they are not used in their LI and L2• The researcher finds out that in the learning process, the English spoken by Burundian learners IS characterized by negative transfer, approximation and overgeneralization.
